ASPERGER'S SYNDROME is
a world wide recognised condition and forms part of the
Autism Spectrum. In Australia 1 : 250 children between the
ages of 6 to 13 have an Autism Spectrum Disorder. It is
a lifelong condition and diagnosis can occur at any
stage during their life.
Albert Einstein, Mozart, Carl Jung, Jane Austen and
Emily Dickinson are among many famous people considered to have
experienced Asperger's Syndrome.
People with Asperger's Syndrome are quite likely
to develop high levels of abilty and expertise in specific areas of
work and professional life. However, these skills are often
overshadowed by difficulties in the social and emotional aspects of
life. They can find themselves shut out of suitable employment,
friendships and social situations. It can
cause extreme frustration, defensiveness and
elevated anxieties in daily life.
People with Asperger's Syndrome are prone to
extreme sensitivity to sensory inputs e.g. sounds, light, touch,
taste and change. A formal diagnosis and implementation of appropriate life strategies
can greatly assist with self esteem and reduce social vulnerability
and risk of self harm.
